MY IRISH STORY
I am honoured to have established my practice since 2014 at Sports Surgery Clinic, a dynamic and progressive institution in Irish healthcare. My Irish story is one of chance and adventure built on a foundation of hard work and desire for self-improvement. My first visit to Ireland was as a medical student in 1998. ENHANCED RECOVERY AFTER KNEE&HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) was pioneered by Henrik Kehlet in Denmark, in the 1990s as an effort to improve recovery after colorectal surgery. Kehlet hypothesized that surgical stress, metabolic and endocrine derangements, and prolonged immobilization contribute to ‘organ dysfunction’: pain, nausea, vomiting, ileus, fatigue, and cognitive disturbance.
IS IT TIME FOR TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT (TKR) SURGERY?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the third-leading cause of life-years lost to disability worldwide. By the age of 65 years half of the population have OA, and this prevalence is expecting to rise as the population ages in demographic terms.
THE YOUNG ARTHRITIC KNEE
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and the third-leading cause of life-years lost to disability. By the age of 65 years, 50% of the population have OA and, as population ages in demographic terms, the prevalence of OA is expected to rise. 90% of people over the age of 40 years complaining of knee pain have OA even if their X-rays are normal.
ACL RUPTURE - THE JOURNEY FROM INJURY TO RETURN TO SPORT
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a 36-40mm long band of fibrous tissue that connects the femur to the tibia. Its function is to control stability when performing twisting actions. The cruciate ligament is usually not required for normal daily living activities, however, it is essential in controlling the rotation forces developed during side stepping, pivoting and landing from a jump.
WHY I TRY TO PRESERVE THE MENISCUS?
The meniscus is a half moon shaped piece of cartilage that lies between the weight bearing joint surfaces of the thigh and the shin, and is attached to the lining of the knee joint. There are two menisci in a normal knee; the outside - the lateral meniscus and the inner side - the medial meniscus.
